Tesla Secures Model S Design Patent After Production Ends

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office granted Tesla a design patent for the Model S body on November 3, months after production ended.

The patent, US-D1156251-S, covers the sedan’s fastback roofline, front lip, side skirts, rear spoiler and diffuser. Drawings show the car from all angles. Tesla filed the application in May 2025, before the January 2026 announcement that Model S and Model X production would end.

The 15-year term protects the exterior design until 2041. Tesla listed chief designer Franz von Holzhausen and Julien Bilodeau as inventors. The company stopped taking orders on March 31 and delivered more than 400,000 Model S sedans since June 2012.

Executives cited high costs to meet new safety standards and the need for factory space for Optimus as reasons for discontinuation. The Model S and Model X lines in Fremont have been removed.

Tesla Reportedly Doubling Output at Giga Texas With Night Shift

Drone footage and updates indicate Giga Texas will add a night shift to run production lines around the clock.

Gigafactory Texas may soon operate with two 12-hour shifts, according to drone pilot Joe Tegtmeyer. Footage shows outbound lots filled with Cybercabs, while the plant builds Cybertrucks, Model Y variants, and Cybercabs.

Tesla has not confirmed the change or which models will see higher output. The shift could address slow Model Y L deliveries and rising Cybercab demand ahead of customer deliveries targeted before year end.

More production might also support FSD-driven demand noted by Tesla. Details could emerge at the December 3 shareholder meeting or with Q4 delivery numbers in January.

“Gigafactory Texas may soon be running around the clock.”
