Tesla Semi Fire Closes I-880 for 10 Hours

A Tesla Semi caught fire on I-880 in Hayward on October 27 with no crash reported, shutting southbound lanes until early October 28.

Image: Electrek

The fire started around 5:35 p.m. PT in the southbound lanes near Route 92. The California Highway Patrol closed both directions due to hazardous chemical smoke risk from the lithium-ion battery. Northbound lanes reopened at 8:40 p.m., while southbound remained closed until about 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The driver exited unhurt and told officers the truck caught fire for unknown reasons. No other vehicles were involved. This marks the second Tesla Semi fire to close a California interstate in two years, following a 2024 crash on I-80.

Investigators have not confirmed the cause. The truck appears to be an older pre-production unit from the Frito-Lay fleet.

Why it mattersFSD drivers on California freeways may face unexpected closures from commercial EV incidents while the Semi fleet grows.
  1. Fire began at 5:35 p.m. PT October 27 on I-880 southbound near Route 92 in Hayward with no crash.12
  2. Southbound lanes closed until 3:30 a.m. October 28, about 10 hours after the fire started.13
  3. Driver reported no injuries and no other vehicles involved; cause remains under investigation.24

Tesla Tested Multiple Cybercab Coloring Methods

Tesla evaluated in-mold lamination and film-over-panel before choosing reaction injection molding for Cybercab color.

Image: Not a Tesla App

Tesla avoided a traditional paint shop for the Cybercab because it is one of the most expensive factory elements and conflicts with unboxed manufacturing of separate modules.

The team considered in-mold lamination, already used on the Semi, and a film-over-panel method but selected reaction injection molding for its speed and cost across varied panel shapes.

Color-infused plastic panels eliminate orange peel and allow simple repairs since color runs through the material.

Why it mattersProduction details clarify how quickly Cybercab robotaxis could reach scale for FSD drivers awaiting network expansion.
  1. Paint shop costs a few hundred million dollars and around a million man-hours to build.1
  2. Cybercab modules are assembled at the end, making paint shop use impractical.1
  3. RIM adds only one step inside existing molding machines and supports half-million-mile durability.1
