Tesla Files Patent for Simpler Vehicle Doors

Tesla has filed a patent for vehicle doors that use the outer panel for strength and mount components directly to it.

Image: Drive Tesla Canada

Tesla revealed a patent application published by the USPTO last week for doors that rely on the outer metal skin for structural support instead of multiple internal reinforcements.

Components such as window motors, handles and hinges would attach directly to the outer panel, which could also replace some side-impact bars. The design allows the panel to be made from a single sheet of steel or aluminum.

Tesla says the approach would cut manufacturing costs and factory space. The filing includes Cybertruck drawings but does not name a production vehicle.

Why it mattersFSD drivers may see the design in future Tesla vehicles that cost less to produce and maintain.
  1. Tesla patent uses outer door panel for strength and protection without as many internal supports.1
  2. Parts like window motors and hinges mount directly to the outer panel.1

Musk Says Tesla Robotaxi Beats Waymo in Austin Miles

Elon Musk claims Tesla's Austin fleet logged more weekly driverless miles than Waymo, though national totals favor the rival.

Image: Electrek

Tesla reported 438,000 driverless miles in Austin for the week ending October 18, topping Waymo's 406,000 weekly average there in Q2. Musk called the Austin result a win and said the race was never a real contest.

The comparison uses Tesla's latest week against Waymo's April-June average. Across all US markets Waymo averaged 3.90 million rider-only miles per week in Q2 while Tesla reached 558,000 in its best week.

Austin accounts for 79 percent of Tesla's driverless miles. Tesla added hundreds of Cybercabs in the city after launching public rides on September 3.

Why it mattersFSD drivers tracking Robotaxi progress should weigh Austin's rapid local growth against Waymo's larger multi-city scale and highway operations.

Emergency Drive Away Used First Time in Austin

A Tesla driver accidentally triggered the Emergency Drive Away function at a Supercharger during Austin F1 race weekend.

Image: Teslarati

The function unlatches the Supercharger connector but still damages the vehicle and charger. Tesla states it can cost up to $25,000 in repairs if activated outside an emergency.

The incident occurred around 6 AM on Sunday when the driver heard a pop and saw the feature engage. The owner later realized the activation was mistaken after reading the prompts only partially.

Tesla defines valid use as facing an immediate threat to life or safety where exiting the vehicle or unplugging would create risk. After any use, owners must schedule a service inspection.

Why it mattersFSD drivers who charge at Superchargers should know the exact activation conditions to prevent accidental and expensive damage.
  1. The Emergency Drive Away function received its first real-world use in Austin during F1 race weekend.1
  2. Tesla previously stated improper use could cost up to $25,000 in repairs to the vehicle and Supercharger.1
  3. Valid activation requires an immediate threat to life or safety where unplugging would delay departure or increase risk.1

Cybercab Battery Uses Four Modules for Easier Repairs

The Cybercab battery pack replaces the Model Y structural design with four individually sealed modules that can be swapped individually.

Image: Teslarati

Tesla built the Cybercab battery pack with four separate, individually sealed modules instead of potting cells into a single block. This change allows a faulty module to be replaced without discarding the entire pack.

Robert Sumpf, Tesla’s director of mechanical design engineering for battery modules and packs, gave the Model Y structural battery a grade D because it was hard to build and nearly impossible to repair. He noted that the service cost outweighs the roughly 10 percent cell volume gain from a fully structural pack.

Part of the extra space inside the pack was also left for a future switch to lower-density LFP cells.

Why it mattersFSD drivers running robotaxis will face lower long-term service costs because individual battery modules can be replaced instead of the entire pack.
“the issue is the service cost”Robert Sumpf1
  1. The Cybercab battery pack uses four separate, individually sealed modules so a bad module can be replaced without scrapping the whole pack.1
  2. Sumpf gave the Model Y structural battery a grade D because it was hard to build and nearly impossible to repair.1
  3. A fully structural pack gains about 10% more cell volume, but the issue is the service cost.1
