NHTSA Proposes Cyan Lights for Driverless Vehicles

The agency filed a proposed rule adding optional cyan marker lamps for autonomous vehicles without steering wheels or pedals.

Image: Not a Tesla App

NHTSA wants to update Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 to allow cyan ADS marker lamps on vehicles like the Cybercab. The lamps would be optional, steady-burning, and limited to one or two per side at least 15 inches off the ground.

The proposed changes appear in the Federal Register on October 26 with a 30-day comment period. They apply only to true driverless operation and would not cover supervised FSD.

NHTSA maintains an open investigation into Cybercab certification even as more than 300 vehicles operate in Austin.

Why it mattersFSD drivers may encounter vehicles using a new visual signal for unsupervised operation once the rule takes effect.
  1. NHTSA filed a proposed rule to modernize FMVSS 108 for autonomous vehicles without steering wheels or pedals, adding optional cyan ADS marker lamps.1
  2. The lamps would be permitted but not required, with one or two cyan lamps allowed on front, sides, and rear, mounted at least 15 inches off the ground and lit steadily.1
  3. NHTSA still has an open investigation into how the Cybercab was certified for commercial deployment.1

Tesla Reveals Roadster Cockpit Display and Track Mode

Tesla released video of the new Roadster's fighter-jet-inspired dashboard that includes Track Mode.

Image: Not a Tesla App

Tesla shared a clip showing the Roadster dashboard with a 3D car model and Track Mode that displays live circuit maps and lap times. The interface also shows telemetry including brake and motor temperatures plus tire pressures and temperatures.

A bottom status bar includes Thruster and Booster Ready indicators tied to the cold-gas thrusters. Drivers can select aerodynamic modes and manually adjust aero balance, brake balance, stability, and traction.

The car remains on display at the Petersen Automotive Museum through October 27.

Why it mattersFSD drivers may encounter similar telemetry and mode-selection elements if Tesla extends the interface approach to its other models.
  1. Roadster interface is inspired by fighter jet cockpits and includes Track Mode with live circuit map and lap times.2
  2. Roadster production is set to begin in 2028.12
  3. The exhibit at the Petersen Automotive Museum runs from October 24 to 27.12

Tesla App Adds Tablet and Foldable Interface

Version 4.62.3 brings a two-column layout to iPads, Android tablets and foldable phones.

Image: Not a Tesla App

Tesla released app version 4.62.3 on October 22, 2026, with a redesigned interface for larger screens. The update replaces the stretched phone layout with a two-column design that places navigation on the left and a larger vehicle visualization on the right.

Controls for the frunk, trunk, charge port and locks now sit on the visualization itself, and a Show PSI button appears below it. Major panels including Climate, Location, Self-Driving, Summon and Charging use the expanded space.

The rollout is gradual and may take an extra week or two for all supported devices.

Why it mattersFSD drivers gain clearer access to Self-Driving and vehicle status panels on tablets or foldables without extra taps.

  1. Version 4.62.3 arrived on October 22, 2026, adding tablet and iPhone Duo support.2
  2. The interface uses a two-column layout with navigation on the left and larger vehicle visualization on the right.2
  3. Buttons for frunk, trunk, charge port and locks move onto the vehicle visualization.1
  4. Climate, Location, Self-Driving, Summon and Charging panels benefit from the larger screen.1

Intel to Make Mystery Chip for Tesla

Tesla has agreed to use Intel's upcoming 14A process for an undisclosed chip.

Image: Not a Tesla App

Intel says Tesla will become a foundry customer on its 14A manufacturing node. The companies have not disclosed which chip Intel will build or any timelines.

The deal is separate from the earlier Terafab project. Intel also reported progress on its 18A node and a $20 billion equity raise to expand foundry capacity.

Timing points to a possible AI6 or later chip, as 14A targets 2028 and would be more advanced than AI5 nodes.

Why it mattersFuture AI hardware capacity could affect when unsupervised FSD hardware reaches wider availability.

Engineer Says Grok Tuned Cybercab Rearview Camera

A Tesla engineer reports Grok optimized the new rearview camera view now available to Cybercab riders.

Image: Tesla North

Tesla senior staff engineer Yun-Ta Tsai said on October 24 that Grok helped tune the rider-facing rearview camera view in the Cybercab. He noted the optimization lets engineers program fixed-function hardware directly without consulting the chip datasheet.

The feature appeared in Austin Cybercab rides late last week. Riders can now open a live rear camera feed on the cabin screen and access additional views by tapping it. A quiet mode that darkens the full display was also added.

Earlier rider requests for on-demand camera access prompted the change, which follows other recent UI updates including redesigned Live Activity widgets.

Why it mattersFSD drivers may benefit if similar Grok-assisted camera tuning reaches production vehicles and improves rearview or repeater camera displays.
“The (human) camera view tuning is optimized with Grok”Yun-Ta Tsai1
  1. Yun-Ta Tsai said the human camera view tuning is optimized with Grok and implements part of the algorithm by directly programming fixed-function hardware without needing the datasheet.1
  2. Riders can now open the rearview camera view during Cybercab rides in Austin, with options to tap for more cameras or swipe to hide.1
  3. A quiet mode that turns the entire Cybercab screen dark was also introduced for riders who want to relax or sleep.1

The update rolled out on October 23 for Austin riders and includes a progress bar with a sliding Cybercab icon plus system-aware light and dark modes.

Wayne S. noted that watchOS received significant updates and that the card uses native iOS colors to match the phone wallpaper.

Additional rider-reported changes include a more detailed mini map, larger arrival time, persistent Hey Grok card, live trip sharing, and rear camera view, though Tesla has not issued release notes.

Why it mattersFSD drivers using Cybercab rides can now track vehicle status directly on their Apple Watch without pulling out an iPhone.
